This historic farmhouse is surrounded by woods, fields, stone walls and the Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary, while affording unique private access to the North Shore Beach on Vineyard Sound and a highly-coveted key to Hancock (South) Beach on the ocean in Chilmark. It combines the peace and quiet of West Tisbury with quick access to Vineyard Haven and is five minutes from the Up-Island market on State Road. The serenity of this spacious 5 bedroom, 21/2 bath home once owned by Henry Beetle Hough (Editor of the Vineyard Gazette and founder with Elizabeth Bowie Hough of the Sheriff's Meadow Foundation) is a great getaway for couples, families and reunions. Enjoy the peacefulness of your morning coffee on the small deck overlooking a Vineyard garden or grill up the catch of the day among friends and entertain until the stars come out on the large deck off the dining room and kitchen. Spend the morning wandering the nearby marked trails of the Sanctuary and the afternoon swimming in the Sound or the Ocean. Then wash off the salt water in the outdoor shower enclosure just out the back door. In the living room, cozy up with a good book by the fireplace or enjoy a movie on a rainy Vineyard day. The first floor has one full bath with a shower and a separate half-bath, and the upstairs bath has an old-fashioned claw-foot tub. Most dogs are welcome (with prior approval and pet deposit) and will enjoy the large yard, which is also ideal for lawn games. Come relax at this authentic Vineyard escape! Please note, the home is partially air conditioned, with AC window units in all five of the bedrooms and a mini-split unit in the dining room/kitchen area.

Vineyard Beauty
We spent a week in this lovely, comfortable, historical home. We love to cook and the kitchen is well stocked. We had morning coffee and evening cocktails on the large deck where the 2 hawks, and a family of deer were the entertainment. It was incredibly quiet. The hiking path to the beach is a nice little workout with the private beach at the end worth all the steps! The location is perfect - while feeling very secluded, the property is within a few minutes drive of Cronigs, Ghost Island Farm (20+ types of tomatoes!) and many other farm stands and small markets. Sandpiper is always a pleasure to work with and the local caretaker checked in with us upon arrival to make sure we had everything we needed. Another beautiful family vacation!

Beautiful setting, great caretaker, historic home
We love visiting the Ephriam Allen home. ItÂ’s so useable and comfortable and enjoying my coffee on the back deck is something I look forward to throughout the year. There is something magical about the setting and we love exploring the walking paths nearby. Thanks for sharing this special place with us.

Stunning Location
We absolutely loved our time here last week. We walked to the beach each evening and watched the sunset. The house has everything you could need. It's a rustic home but very comfortable and the history of the house is very special. We would definitely come back!

Simply beautiful
We had a beautiful 2 weeks on this property. ItÂ’s located in an intensely private, serene and gorgeous setting. Hiking trails that lead to the ocean were used each morning and a deck overlooking an old pasture was enjoyed every night.
The historic farmhouse feels larger than it is with lots of bedrooms and an ample kitchen / pantry / dining and living room space. We had everything we needed. There are three gorgeous fireplaces in the home and itÂ’s classically decorated with beautiful pieces of art. What a special place - the Vineyard is always magical but this property is really special. Thank you for sharing its beauty with us.
