KATAMA (Wampanoag word meaning "crab fishing place")
Katama begins at the fork in the road near the Katama Store and is best descried as the plains area on the south shore of Edgartown. It has been a popular summer resort for hundreds of years and it's now one of the most sought-after vacation destinations on the island. "The way the sun shines is just a bit different, it's brighter", says one Katama afficionado. The old grass Katama Airfield and the Katama Farm occupy the flat land just north of South Beach and homes surround the plains stretching from Katama Bay to the Edgartown Great Pond. South Beach is wildly popular for its surf and sand, and you'll find throngs of walkers and bikers enjoying the wide, paved paths that outline the inner Katama triangle on nice days. There are a number of places to launch small watercraft in Katama and the calm waters of Katama Bay and the Edgartown Great Pond are especially good spots for nature lovers to paddle board or kayak.
